John Whitmore (United Kingdom) was born in 1937 into a rural wartime childhood. He was educated at Eton College, Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, and Cirencester Agricultural College before becoming a professional racing driver. He won both British and European Saloon Car Championships and was a member of the Le Mans winning Ford Works team. He retired in 1966 to run a large agribusiness, and was a director of a Ford Main Dealership and a Design Company. He obtained an instrument rating and commercial pilot's licence.

In 1968 he sold all his business interests, moved to Switzerland and then the United States to study physics, psychotherapy and sports psychology. In 1978 he returned to England to set up a tennis, golf and ski school based on Inner Game principles which are now central to coaching in business. He soon began to apply his work to business and eventually abandoned work in sport for the additional challenge that business brought.

He teamed up with David Hemery and David Whitaker in the early eighties to form Performance Consultants specialising in Coaching and Teamworking for business. He works with a large number of blue chip clients, such as Friends Provident and Standard Life in the financial sector, British Airways in aviation, AstraZeneca and Roche in the pharmaceutical industry, several major retailers, leading business consultancies and the public sector. He is particularly interested in promoting major culture change in business to keep up with the accelerating pace of change in society.

He has produced and directed a feature film, and appeared on TV and radio programmes; he lectures widely and has written many articles and several books on related subjects including a definitive book on coaching, 'Coaching for Performance', a best seller published in 15 languages and now in its third edition.
