You are here: HomeAbout WABCSocial Contributions

We believe that business is a potent force for solving social problems.

We understand that international leadership demands broad and deep corporate integrity. This is one of our core values. One of the ways we express this value is through asking ourselves: How can we best contribute to the welfare of others and the world beyond our everyday range of contact? We hope you'll ask yourself this same question too.

WABC Support for CARE

In March 2004, WABC began providing essential financial support to CARE Canada's efforts in the small enterprise development, helping small farmers in Uganda through the newly established Agricultural Marketing Initiative (AMI) project.

Despite making impressive progress in recent years, Uganda is still one of the world's poorest countries with over 80% of the population living on less than US $1 per day.

CARE's AMI project aims to help 3000 poor sesame farmers improve their financial security through commercialization. The farmers have struggled economically because of insufficient linkages to larger markets, limited access to inputs and poor local organization. The AMI project will address these challenges and more through business training, market research and development, credit services and technical support. CARE will make specific efforts to improve women's empowerment in the region through AMI: at least 50% of project participants will be female.

CARE Canada is grateful for the ongoing financial support from the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC). According to Dr. John Watson, president and CEO of CARE Canada, the contributions from established organizations to those struggling in the developing world demonstrate an important social commitment: “Despite operating in very different conditions, businesspeople around the world share the same aspirations and drive to succeed. It is significant that businesses here feel compelled to assist those who need it elsewhere, not in the form of a hand out, but a hand-up. We are very appreciative of the WABC's support for our efforts to help poor entrepreneurs provide for themselves and their families.”

About CARE
CARE is an international network of humanitarian charities that was formed in 1946 to bring emergency relief—in the form of “CARE Packages”—to the people of Europe. CARE's commitment to humanitarian assistance continues to this day, and is complimented by a broad range of long-term development programmes in water and community health, agro-forestry and conservation, and small enterprise and income generation. In 2003, CARE International's programs assisted more than 30 million people in over 60 developing countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe.
