John Whitmore (United Kingdom) was born in 1937 into a rural wartime childhood. He was educated at Eton College, Sandhurst Royal Military Academy, and Cirencester Agricultural College before becoming a professional racing driver. He won both British and European Saloon Car Championships and was a member of the Le Mans winning Ford Works team. He retired in 1966 to run a large agribusiness, and was a director of a Ford Main Dealership and a Design Company. He obtained an instrument rating and commercial pilot's license.
